A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
