Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
