As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
